The Legacy of Bansi Bilash
The story of Bansi Bilash is a journey rooted in devotion, art, and legacy. In 1983, it was born from the heartfelt vision of Sri Rabi Narayan Prasad Mohanty and Smt. Krishnapriya, with a sacred mission—to preserve and promote the timeless beauty of Odissi culture through the divine tales of Sri Krishna Leela. This dream took wing when legendary maestros such as Sangeet Sudhakar Balkrishna Das, Guru Deba Prasad Das, and Pandit Rangadhar Sarangi came together in a remarkable collaboration. Their collective brilliance gave rise to Basanta Raasa, a spellbinding dance-drama performed in the classical Odissi style.
In 1984, this extraordinary production was adapted into a feature film— a pioneering work that went on to receive multiple awards for its artistic excellence and creative vision. Building on this success, Bansi Bilash created a rich repertoire of productions for both stage and Doordarshan, including Madhura Milana, Swapna Bilas, Sri Krishna Balyaleela, Nimai Sanyas, Hori Leela, and Sharad Raasa—each reflecting a deep commitment to storytelling through the Odissi tradition. Over the years, Bansi Bilash blossomed into a vibrant cultural movement, dedicated to keeping tradition alive while inspiring new artistic expressions. Today, under the artistic direction of Leena Mohanty, Bansi Bilash continues to nurture future generations in the Deba Prasad tradition of Odissi, with training centres in Bhubaneswar and Bangalore. Bansi Bilash continues to expand its reach across India and around the world, carrying forward a legacy that is both timeless and ever-renewing.
